Hertha’s U17s win the Youngster Cup!

Game-by-game improvement

On the first day of the tournament, our youth team, coached by Oliver Reiß, did not get off to the best of starts in Group B, losing 1-0 to Eintracht Frankfurt U17s. Later that day, they went on to beat PSV Eindhoven 3-0 thanks to a goal from Pepe Pereira Mendes and a brace from Oliver Rölke. In addition, other results went our way to secure Hertha a spot in the semi-finals despite losing their opening fixture. “After the first game, we improved immensely over the rest of the tournament,” commented Reiß.

First Valencia, then PSG –Nkili awarded Player of the Tournament

The constant improvement indicated by Reiß was very evident on the second day of the tournament. Leander Popp and Eliyas Strasner scored crucial goals to seal a 2-0 win over Valencia. Paris Saint-Germain were no match for our young lads in the final. Around 1,000 spectators turned up to Union Berlin’s stadium to watch the final and third-place play-off match, where they witnessed Popp score the decisive goal against the biggest club in France’s youth team, sparking joyous celebrations. To supplement this tournament victory, Hertha’s Aseko Nkili was named Player of the Tournament, capping off a very successful weekend for the young Blue-and-Whites!

“Against PSV Eindhoven in the group stages, the whole team had a great energy both on and off the pitch, which allowed us to develop a real team spirit. We were celebrating tackles and blocks as if they were goals,” said Reiß, who highlighted this spirit as a key reason behind the team’s success.  “This enthusiasm also spread to the crowd, who came together to support our boys. The energy that grew with each game took us to the final and eventually to winning the competition itself! We were absolutely thrilled,” concluded the 38 year old, jubilantly.

League finally gets underway on Saturday

With one trophy already in the bag, anticipation is growing for this coming weekend. Following a long wait, the U17s begin their 2021/22 Bundesliga Nord/Nordost campaign with an away fixture against Holstein Kiel.
